India's strides in artificial intelligence (AI) are notable, with investments and efforts skyrocketing. However, a significant gender gap persists within this technological revolution, posing challenges and opportunities for India Inc. 

According to LinkedIn data, the percentage of women in AI talent in India rose to nearly 30% in 2022, up from 25% in 2016, showcasing progress but highlighting remaining disparities. To address this, firms like Hexaware Technologies, Accenture, Tech Mahindra, and Capgemini are spearheading initiatives such as upskilling programs, mentorship opportunities, and targeted recruitment drives.

Vidhi Chugh, CEO and founder at All About Scale, emphasizes the importance of addressing disparities in education opportunities for girls from grassroots levels. Encouraging girls to pursue interests in STEM fields early on is crucial for fostering diverse AI talent pools.

Diversity within AI teams is not only a matter of representation but also of creating more effective and fair AI solutions. Executives stress the need for vigilant monitoring and adjustment of AI models to mitigate biases that may perpetuate societal inequalities. Additionally, fostering inclusive work environments enhances talent attraction, retention, and ultimately, competitiveness in the market.

Vaibhav Goyal, CEO at Predixion AI, underlines the role of diverse teams in building trust in AI technology, essential for wider adoption and acceptance. The underrepresentation of women in AI startups is another challenge. Despite India being home to over 8,000 startups with women founders, a significant portion remains unfunded. Can AI itself contribute to improving gender representation in the field?
